Sustainability is an event sponsored by Sina

The event bridges high-level UN dialogues with consumer-facing green initiatives to tackle urgent global sustainable challenges

As extreme weather events and rapid AI advances increasingly disrupt global norms, international leaders will gather in Shanghai next week to discuss climate action and green technology as crucial arenas for international cooperation at the 2026 Sustainability Global Leaders Conference

Hosted by the World Green Design Organization and Chinese technology and media company Sina Group, the event on Oct. 20-22 is expected to draw over 300 speakers. While the conference is framed around global governance and resilience, a major underlying theme is the international expansion of Chinese companies. Chinese firms are increasingly leveraging green technology and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives to navigate complex global markets and appeal to international stakeholders.

In an era of fractured international relations, the transition to renewable energy and sustainable practices remains a rare point of potential collaboration. Stephen A. Orlins, president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, is slated to speak at the event to emphasize U.S.-China commercial collaboration. According to Sina Tech, Orlins maintains that if the two major economic powers can work together, the path to a global green transition will be significantly smoother.

The conference will also highlight both the existential climate crises faced by vulnerable nations and corporate sustainability showcases of major economies. Representatives from nations on the front lines of climate change — such as Fazeel Najeeb, the Maldives ambassador to China, and Amr Hamouda, president of Egypt’s Marine Hazards Mitigation Center and vice chair of IOC-UNESCO — will detail the immediate, life-threatening risks of rising sea levels and extreme heat, as well as strategies for climate adaptation, shifting the focus from abstract strategies to urgent survival.

Against the backdrop of these urgent climate pleas, major Chinese corporations will present their green initiatives. Executives from automaker Geely (0175.HK) and dairy producer Yili (600887.SH) will share their sustainability practices. Other heavyweights, including China Eastern Airlines (0670.HK; 600115.SH) and Fosun International (0656.HK), plan to outline how technological innovation and industrial upgrades fit into their long-term growth strategies.

AI — specifically its impact on human development and climate modeling — will be another focal point. The conference will feature dialogues on the social implications of AI, with speakers including Tomas Lamanauskas, deputy secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union. In a pre-conference conversation with Sina Finance, Celeste Saulo, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, also praised China’s “MAZU” system, an AI-driven meteorological early warning solution.

The event will also feature technical and philosophical debates on technology’s role in society. Turing Award laureate Joseph Sifakis is slated to speak, while anthropologists Alan Macfarlane of the University of Cambridge and Xiang Biao of the Max Planck Institute will lead a dialogue on how rapid technological evolution might alter human relationships.

The organizers are also attempting to move beyond elite forums to bring sustainability concepts to the general public. The event includes the second Green Industry and Sustainable Consumption Expo, which is open to the public and features over 30 companies.

The expo aims to blend high-level United Nations dialogues with consumer-facing green initiatives. Brands such as food delivery giant Meituan (3690.HK), fast-food giant McDonald’s (MCD.US), and second-hand marketplace Xianyu will set up interactive spaces focused on everyday sustainability, such as reducing packaging and recycling used goods. By integrating these consumer brands, the organizers say they hope to transform sustainability from a niche industry topic into a mainstream lifestyle choice.
