China’s box office set a new record during this year’s weeklong Lunar New Year holiday, according to data from Maoyan Pro. As of 8 a.m. on Wednesday, the top 10 movies had brought in cumulative proceeds of 10.9 billion yuan ($1.52 billion) in their first eight days of release, up 39% from 7.85 billion yuan in the year-ago period.

“Nezha: Demon Child Conquers the Sea” led the group with a cumulative box office of just over 5 billion yuan, accounting for nearly half the total. It was followed by “Detective Chinatown 1900,” which brought in 2.3 billion yuan. “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force” was third with a box office of 1 billion yuan.

China’s box office was worth 42.5 billion yuan last year, meaning this year’s Lunar New Year holiday take was equal to a quarter of ticket sales for all of last year.
