BRIEF: PDD workers fired after brawl with government investigators

Discount e-commerce company PDD Holdings Inc. (PDD.US) has fired several people from its government relations department who became involved in a physical altercation with government investigators earlier this month, Caixin reported on Wednesday.
The fight broke out on Dec. 3 between PDD workers and local government officials in Shanghai who went to the company’s office to conduct an investigation on a referral from the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), sources familiar with the matter told Caixin.
The police were called after the fight broke out, and PDD, which operates the popular Pinduoduo app in China and Temu abroad, later penalized several of its workers for obstructing official duties. On Tuesday, a person who said he was a former PDD government relations worker claimed in a group chat that he was wrongfully dismissed, according to a screenshot seen by Caixin.
The incident occurred as Chinese regulators have repeatedly called on companies to rein in cutthroat competition that has ravaged a number of industries. PDD’s stock has fallen steadily since rumors of the altercation emerged, dropping about 7% over the last five trading days.
