TikTok’s Canadian unit said Wednesday it has filed an emergency motion with Canada’s Federal Court seeking judicial review of an order requiring the company to shut down its operations in the country. The company asked the court to set aside the order and return it to the government for review, along with guidance.

On Nov. 6 the Canadian government announced its decision to terminate TikTok’s Canadian entity, TikTok Technology Canada Inc. on national security grounds. Such a move would bar it from conducting business within the country but would not restrict the public from using the popular app. TikTok has more than 14 million monthly users in Canada.

In its court filing dated Dec. 5, TikTok noted that ending its local operations would result in hundreds of people losing their jobs. “We believe it’s in the best interest of Canadians to find a meaningful solution and ensure that a local team remains in place, alongside the TikTok platform,” the company said.
